InhalteWith the emergence of Artistic Research as an academic topic, research is viewed as a crucial activity of both scientists and artists. Artistic and scientific forms of research are influencing each other reciprocally. We observe how scientific methods of experimentation, investigation, interviewing, collecting data etc. are manifesting themselves in contemporary theatre. Thereby, the focus shifts away from the product to the process. Traditional narrative patterns (beginning – middle – end) are challenged by structural patterns imported from the sciences (assumption – experiment/investigation – evaluation). In this seminar we shall deliberate new creative processes in the theatre, in particular whether and how the noted shift transfers creative responsibility from the author/director to the actor. Latin creare means to ‘invent’ or simply to ‘produce’; the Cre-attore (be it an individual or a group) both devises and presents the show, no longer a mere instrument of an author (prescribed words) and a director (prescribed actions). Do we have to reinvent the theatre? What is at stake, it seems, is the future role of the theatre in a society in which the media are increasingly replacing reality. Could theatre become the art form in which the boundary between reality and fiction can still be drawn and perceived? And actors, as creative artist-researchers, the mediators of this liminality?
