InhalteOur urban environment is increasingly becoming populated by digital technologies, enabling people to experience and explore cities in new ways, and to access data from sensors, such as pollution levels through smart phone apps and AR. But this fast digital technology transformation is not reflected in the physical structure the city is made of. What would happen if the material environment managed to transcend its traditional ways of adapting and changing? Which forces would guide such transformation: individual citizens, collective events, government, weather or geological forces? Which experiences, conflicts and negotiations could emerge from such transformations? How welcoming, dangerous, contemplating or exciting could such changing places feel? How could people inhabit and appropriate such public spaces?

In this course, we will imagine and design adaptive urban spaces that can enable people to participate, to be welcoming, to relax, to have a sense of belonging and connectedness to the environment. We will design such scenarios by engaging hands-on with DIY materials that can quickly transform. This will allow us to directly tackle the ideas of a world that is endowed with the qualities of adaptability and transformation.

This course is a collaboration of Industrial Design and Interaction Design fields, with guests from the Material Experience Lab at Politecnico di Milano. It will include a Symposium, hands-on workshops, field visits in Milano or Zurich, and a final exhibition at Viaduktraum. The results can range from scaled models of urban areas to full size prototypes of know or yet unknown urban objects.
