InhalteThis course will consider the boundaries of what constitutes language, and will challenge the ways in which the borders of language are policed via metaphors like the apparatus and the frame. Today, as we conceive of language primarily through specific technological apparatus (the page, the computer, the university, the nation state, etc.), we engage with text and textuality through terms that are set by institutions with interests that are often different to our own. And yet language––the way we communicate, script, and structure reality––remains a site of resistance and creativity, a material through which we can challenge the homogenizing and repressive inequities of globalizing capital while visioning alternative, prefigurative frameworks that seek decolonial futures and that dismantle hierarchies in the present.

This course will work to build a cooperative forum for thinking through the ways that language can be used as an artistic means with which to disrupt, widen and reformulate the metaphor/material of the frame. It will seek a group work methodology in which participation of all members of the group is encouraged. Types of frames that the course might consider/trouble in relation to language include (but are not limited to): the internet, the nonprofit contemporary art institution, the metaverse, ZHdK, de-occupation/de-militarization/de-financialization, translation, the people, etc.
