Lernziele / KompetenzenDefining ‘research based’ practice, developing new research techniques based on speculative philosophy, examining new trends in the ‘site specific’ genre, collaborative exhibition making.
InhalteThis seminar will explore new approaches to site and artistic genre of the site specific following recent developments emerging from the philosophical genre of Speculative Realism (SR). SR underpins new thinking about materials and their relation to the human, and has particular critical relevance to the concept of the Anthropocene and the agency of geology, and consequently the agency of technics. Universalist thinking erodes the ‘specificity’ of site, calling for new approaches.

In the first segment of the seminar students will be introduced to experimental geophilosophical research techniques and analysis drawing on theory fiction, scientific realism, psychoanalysis, and the work of the Speculative Realists. We will discuss the origins of the site specific genre and examine the work of contemporary artists whose practices engage with new materialisms and attempt to disrupt the normative concept of the site specific.

In the second segment, we will define research parameters and undertake a collaborative project using these techniques to forensically unpack the ZHdK site itself. The themes will encompass all material aspects of the ZHdK site leading from the socio/historical, to the fiscal, the technical, the biological, and ultimately the geological.

We will then develop a temporary exhibition/display in order to examine objective and subjective representation in relation to the new site specific. We will assess the value of diagrammatics and other representational tools, specifically looking at ways to break the pattern of political leverage traditionally exerted on the genre.
