Inhalte | This seminar explores different aspects of the medium’s history, seen through seminal exhibitions of photography. The major part of the seminar will be devoted to the place of photography within past and contemporary curatorial practices, including the most recent internet projects. Besides the first photoshows (19th century photography salons or world exhibitions), a strong accent will be placed on events that became important landmarks in art history, such as the "Film und Foto Ausstellung" in Stuttgart, 1929. The political functions of the medium will be discussed thoroughly. Exhibitions like "Road to Victory" (MoMA, 1942) or "Family of Man" (MoMA 1955), which attracted crowds of people, unveiled the means of socio-political manipulation and propaganda. The history of photography exhibitions may be also examined through the specificity of installations, respectively. Conceptual photographers (e.g. Bernd and Hilla Becher) and contemporary artists (e.g. Wolfgang Tillmans, Liz Deschenes) introduced new ways of space arrangement. Such installations may significantly influence the gallery audience, giving additional meaning to the pictures' contents. Apart from lectures by Witold Kanicki, students will be asked to participate in discussions, read short texts and present them in the form of 20 minutes powerpoint presentations, containing selected quotations from the texts, respectively. Whereas the morning sessions will focus on lectures and student presentations, the afternoons will be dedicated to visits to photography exhibitions (a.o. Fotomuseum Winterthur) and discussions of theme-related films and movies. |
