Lernziele / KompetenzenThis workshop will look at recent developments in
contemporary art in post-9/11 New York, specifically the
transformation of artist-run spaces into commercial
gallery enterprises. From this context, we will evaluate
the hybrid role of the artist/dealer and question the
potential and limits of this position. We will look at the
role of Reena Spaulings Fine Art– a gallery and artist
collective – as an agent of recent developments.
Questions will be raised about the sustainability and
professionalization of critical art practices. Furthermore
we will look at the influence of art advisors, curators
and collectors on the art that gets exhibited and
collected, and examine the factors that shape the
conditions of production. Discussions of students’ work
is welcome.
