Lernziele / KompetenzenThe course is mainly designed for students of physical theatre, but other MasterCampus students interested
are very welcome. New forms of theatre, including Physical theatre, rarely start their creation on the basis of a
text. Due to the lack of a precisely formulated centre for one's questioning (which is text in traditional
dramaturgy), it brings creators very often to a state of confusion and disorientation during the process of
creation.
InhalteThe course is intended to help creators understand basic rules of dramaturgy, emanating from theatre plays of
Antique Greece, mostly Sophocles' plays, as well as plays of Shakespeare and Beckett. The course will
provide basic definitions of elementary dramaturgic terminology, such as “situation”, "dramatic situation”,
“character/role”, “picture/scene”, story, plot, etc. These terms will be (re)discovered and understood not
through the teacher’s definition, but through common discussions and by asking questions.
During the course, we will discover the ritual bases of theatre, its birth from cultic drama, rituals, and
ceremonies. Students will also have the opportunity to compare a variety of transformations (presence or
absence) of these ritualistic bases in modern and contemporary theatre.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to practical exercises of writing a “story” and its transformation
into a drama: play/screenplay/plot. If time allows, students will also have the opportunity to practice the
transformation of the written “story” onto stage and to experience different perspectives of staging from
different positions as author – director – actor.
