| Inhalte | Pm 12 thematizes the complex web of relationships between neoliberalism and gender/sexuality. Using examples from cinema and contemporary art, we will focus on identity construction and the formation of the idea of the individual, in both artistic and political terms. In particular we will explore films and TV series that map both the build-up and the breakdown of the primacy of self- and individual expression. One important source for our discussion will be Adam Curtis’ documentary The Century of the Self, available to watch on Youtube. This film traces the influence and instrumentalization of Freud’s ideas of the subconscious in the hippie and new age movements of the 1960s and 1970s and suggests their culmination in the domination of advertising and frenzied consumerism. The echoes and conflicts such ideas present for contemporary art will be the basis of our discussions and exploration. |
