Accidental Tourist Guide, Reality Reconstruction

Hong Kong, a city and region with a high degree of internal auton- omy and greater self-government rights in China, is regarded as an exemplary expression of urbanity, as an ideal form of capitalism, and at the same time with the various Occupy movement as a center for a policy of participation. The city appears as a multifac- eted focal point of current issues.
Ten students of the ZHdK have the opportunity to explore the pos- sibility of the social and cultural life and the urban structures of some areas in Hong Kong, together with students from Helsinki (Aalto University) and a Hong Kong University, and several experts and researchers. We focus on a district that is currently in a process of gentrification. Based on various art research strategies, the insights can be visualized in different media. Students work together in culturally mixed teams.

LehrformThe project will be divided in three phases. During the first phase students from Zurich and Helsinki do online-research on a specific area in Hong Kong and develop an imaginary sightseeing-tour for this area, based on selected material exclusively researched by Google Street View. Together they communicate by Skype and other channels, and plan processes and possible methods for phase two.
During the second phase the students teams will act in real space in Hong Kong.
Part three, the exhibition, reflection and documentation phase. After the project in Hong Kong, the students Zurich, Helsinki and Hong Kong will exhibit the projects at their campus. After the exhibitions, students and lecturers will work on a reasonable documentation, reflecting the whole project.
ZielgruppenWahlpflicht für alle Bachelorstudierenden, offen für Masterstudierende
InhalteThe project focuses on self-awareness and self-reflection in a transcultural context, on discerning differences in aesthetic per- ception and practices, and understanding differences of intercul- tural development processes in the field of educational and design projects and formats.
The collaboration with students and professors from the Aalto Uni- versity Helsinki intend an intensive discussion about cultural differ- ences, prejudices, different perception and behaviour from the be- ginning, in the first part by distance learning media, in the second part, the project week in Hong Kong, face to face.
The fact that students and professors from two different but Euro- pean countries, deal together with a foreign city and culture, caus- es that the perceived, the findings and the questions are already internationally communicated and discussed during the process. This setting leads to serious and substantive dispute and analysis from the beginning of the project.
Transcultural and cross-disciplinary collaborations require constant re- flection. During the project, the observation and documentation of the meta-level will be evaluated together with our partners in Helsinki and Hong Kong, e.g. Connecting Spaces Hong Kong. On the meta-level, the different art practices and strategies, communication and work processes as well media communication methods and formats (dis- tance learning/ on-site actions/ acts) will be observed and analyzed.
The students from Zurich and Helsinki will research together on the subject of everyday practices in public space (e.g. use of public space; shopping; eating; leisure-time activity, public interactions; characteristics of architecture and space; …). The subject
„Accidental Tourist Guide“ will work as a emulsifier to communicate, reformulate ideas, perceptions, cultural diversities, but also to discuss different forms of communication, the use of language, constructions and descriptions of reality through language. It is open to discussion to limit the possible topics.
