InhalteExperimental film and poetry have quite a few things in common. They are voluntarily marginal in relation to the mainstream of their respective fields (the novel, the feature film). They are both considered "difficult" by general audiences as they engage in a politics of form that throws the reader / watcher back unto herself, into the present of reading / watching, instead of the present of a story. Hence, it should come as no surprise that there has been a lot of border traffic between the two, which this module will examine. It looks at poet-filmmakers; at collaborations between experimental filmmakers and poets; at filmmakers and video artists who use poetry in their work; at social contexts in which poets, filmmakers, and sometimes other visual artists, mutually engaged with and influenced each other's work. The two fields will thus elucidate each other and lead to a deeper understanding of both. Topics include the differences and confluences of words and images, the role of language in film, the role of imagery in poetry, and the translation of formal strategies from one medium to the other, and sometimes back again.
