Inhalte | In his 1976 series of Artforum articles, "Inside the White Cube," Brian O'Doherty made the simple but powerful claim that the art gallery is not a neutral context. Despite its presentation as invisible or natural, the contemporary gallery space asserts a distinct ideological bearing upon the production and distribution of art. In similar fashion, a number of technological, spatial and aesthetic factors shape the production and reception of poetry. Despite the popular/romantic conception of white space as equivalent to silence, emptiness, the void, it seems increasingly persuasive to argue that there is no such thing as a "blank page," but that the page, or indeed any (writing) technology, comes with its own distinct ideological bearings. Departing from the conventional pedagogical approach that considers creative writing as a craft to be honed, Curating Poetry will instead investigate how text can work within and against contexts, technologies and subjectivities, formulating these as practices that can be unlearned and reconstituted. It will look beyond the page, investigating the implications of poetry before pen is committed to paper, and will consider an expanded poetics as a critical lever in counter-institutional struggles and social practice. Areas the course might cover are: concrete poetry, digital poetry, publishing poetry, spatial poetry, punctuation. No previous experience with poetry or curating is required for this course, but interest in at least one of these two fields is crucial. |
